Jonathan Meretsky is a global strategies and geopolitical risk advisor. Meretsky provides counsel to insurers, reinsurers, banks, private equity, hedge funds, finance providers, and global growth businesses. Meretsky has designed and implemented complex global structured finance, advised on modernization of financial regulation, crafted innovative derivative financial instruments, and counselled leading corporate global constellations since beginning his professional legal career at Hughes Hubbard & Reed LLP in 1997. He provides strategic advice and critical advocacy for enterprises seeking to do business outside of their comfort zone. Prior to Merit House, Meretsky was Senior Strategic Advisor at the law firm (now known as) McMillan LLP focused on China matters. He is acclaimed for serving as corporate legal counsel in the iconic Yukos legal battle, successfully bolstering the international rules-based order. As a member of the California bar, he served as senior counsel on various marquee international trade, securities, insurance, and finance matters working in China, Central Asia, Europe, and Latin America achieving successful market integration in transportation, energy, finance, media, and supply chain commerce. His clients include major global enterprises such as GE, Lazard, and H.I.G. Capital and various leading capital providers and high growth businesses. He has experience working with various multilateral organizations such as OECD and negotiating solutions on complex foreign policy trade matters. When it comes to the global edge of digital transactions, Meretsky has been a leading authority for over 20 years.
Meretsky has been engaged with think tanks and Canadian global policy for nearly a decade. He's been a Halifax International Security Forum delegate since 2014 and has served as a panel moderator. He participates with and contributes to Atlantic Council programs and initiatives. Meretsky graduated Harvard Law School in international tax (LLMITP), Boston University School of Law with LLM in banking and securities law, and Colgate University in political science. He studied at University of Cambridge, Doshisha University in Kyoto, University of Hong Kong Faculty of Law, and International Relations in Geneva, Switzerland with Colgate. He was senior editor of Harvard Journal of Law and Public Policy, Lecturer-at-Law at UCLA School of Law teaching Commercial Lending and Structured Finance, served on the ABA Committee on Financial Services, and served on the legal & regulatory committee of Stock Transfer Association of Canada. He has been on the Board of Directors and audit committees of Atlantic Institute of Market Studies (now Fraser Institute), Halifax Grammar School and The Discovery Centre. He invented USPTO patent Trust Enhanced Algorithm in 2005, an early blockchain component. Meretsky is a leader with respect to use of insuretech, fintech, autonomous vehicles, predictive AI algorithms, and energy security, and participates on advisory boards of various technological leading enterprises.
